Corpus Christi Port officials: Vessel traffic down, cargo weight up
واضح آرشیو وب فارسی:تین نیوز: TIN news: Officials for the Port of Corpus Christi say vessel traffic at the nation’s fifth largest port is on pace to drop after four years of consecutive growth. But the story doesn’t end there. They say they’re also anticipating a jump in the volume of liquid and bulk goods that are unloaded on their docks, despite weak oil prices. Ship and barge traffic from January to Sept. 30 was down 8 percent from the same period last year, according to a port financial report. However, tonnage of cargo brought to the port during that same period increased by 6 percent. Sean C. Strawbridge, the port’s chief operating officer, interpreted the trend to mean that larger vessels were sailing to the area. A total of 5,812 vessels sailed through the port during the first nine months of 2015, compared with 6,299 vessels the same time last year, according to port financial records. The weight of port cargo steadily climbed during the same period. In all, 77.9 million tons of cargo moved through the port between January and September, compared with 73.3 million the same months a year earlier. Signs of a traffic slow down were visible as early as May. U.S. crude oil proved reserves increased in 2014 for the sixth year in a row, while production of crude oil and lease condensate increased about 17 percent, from 7.4 to 8.7 million barrels per day, according to a full-year 2014 profile released Monday by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The report said proved reserves of natural gas rose by 34.8 trillion cubic feet, or 10 percent, to a record high of 388.8 trillion cubic feet in 2014. Oil reserves rose 3.4 billion barrels, or 9 percent, to 39.9 billion barrels, the highest since 1972. Crude and petroleum accounted for 66.7 million tons of cargo at the port from January to September, compared with 61.6 million tons for the first three quarters of 2014. Before last year, the highest volume of traffic was reported in 2005. That year, 7,335 vessels sailed through the port. Strawbridge said the port may be well-positioned for future growth that will come once the decades-old federal ban on crude exports is lifted. In the meantime, port officials are confident they are closer than ever to making the Corpus Christi Ship Channel big enough for larger cargo ships. Supramax and handymax vessels, which can carry up to 60,000 tons and 35,000 tons of cargo respectively, are usually spotted in port waters. Panamax-class ships, which are mid-sized cargo vessels measuring about 960 feet, also have been seen, and are handled at the port’s bulk terminal. It can be tricky for larger ships in the port because its floor is too shallow in a lot of spots. The port has gotten authorization to widen the channel to 530 feet from Port Aransas to the Harbor Bridge. It also was approved to deepen the entire channel to 52 feet from 45 feet. Port officials, however, do not have the estimated $300 million needed to do the work. “Larger ships are definitely coming,” said Richard Ralph Valls Jr., a member of the port’s seven-member commission. “It’s extremely important that it (project) gets done. Otherwise we’re going to see lots of congestion out there.”
