Iran-Carpet-Mirkazemi
Export of Iranian hand-woven carpets has increased by seven percent since the start of current Iranian year on March 21, 2008, Commerce Minister Masoud Mirkazemi said on Sunday.
Mirkazemi made the remark while addressing the first gathering of Iranian producers and exporters of hand-woven carpets in Tehran.
Referring to the worldwide financial crisis and its effects on purchase of hand-made carpets across the world, he underlined that such a crisis could be solved once proper measures are taken in this respect.
Pointing to a decline in export of Iranian hand-woven carpets, he stated that such a dilemma is not restricted to Iran alone.
Mirkazemi said currently people"s taste has changed and they prefer to use floor coverings instead of carpets across the world.
"Iran should try to create new designs and encourage foreign countries to buy its products," he said.
"In a bid to eliminate the problems facing carpet producers and exporters, a carpet committee will be established in near future," he said.
Persian carpets are still superior in quality from every aspect because of its unique pile material, design and color, attractive borders, threads and knot density despite facing serious challenges on the global carpet market.
In addition, carpet weaving is a well-established practice in most parts of Iran, with unique designs and colors specific to those regions such as Tabriz, Kashan, Qom, Isfahan, Mashhad, Naiin, Kerman and Hamedan.
Importers of Iran"s hand-woven carpets are mainly countries with high per capita income. They include Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Austria, Britain, the United Arab Emirates, Japan and Canada.
Currently some 2 million people are engaged in producing hand-woven carpets in Iran.
Holding provincial carpet fairs, producing movies about Persian carpets and showing advertisements on foreign TV channels are among the important measures for introducing Iranian hand-woven carpets and encouraging foreign countries to buy them.
