`Eid-ul-Fitr"-Celebrations
`Eid-ul-Fitr" (Feast of Fast Breaking) prayers were held in different Iranian cities as well as a host of other countries on Wednesday.
In Tehran at Musalla (Grand Prayers Ground), Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei led `Eid-ul-Fitr" congregational prayers as millions of faithful worshipers gathered at the site to perform the ritual.
Also present at the prayers were high-ranking state and military officials, including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Head of the Experts Assembly and Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani, Tehran"s Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, former Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, former President Mohammad Khatami, as well as ambassadors and envoys of Muslim countries.
Prayer leaders in Iranian cities and provinces such as Mashhad (Razavi Khorassan Province), Ardabil, Kashan (Isfahan Province), Karaj (Tehran Province), Boroujerd (Lorestan Province), Semnan, Kerman, Kordestan, Sari (Mazandaran Province), Kish (Hormuzgan Province), Maraghe (East Azarbaijan Province), Isfahan, Mazandaran, Yazd, Kermanshah, Chabahar (Sistan-Balouchestan Province), Shahr-e-Rey (Tehran Province), Tabriz (East Azarbaijan Province), Bojnourd (North Khorassan Province), Hamedan, Gonbad-Kavoos (Golestan Province), Ahvaz (Khuzestan Province), Charmahal-va-Bakhtiari, Arak (Markazi Province), Bandar-Abbas (Hormuzgan Province), Qazvin, Zanjan, Bushehr, Abadan (Khuzestan Province), Semnan, Ilam, and Kohgilouyeh-Boyerahmad Province in their sermons congratulated the faithful on the auspicious occasion.
The religious figures called for Muslims" unity and solidarity in the face of conspiracies hatched by enemies of Islam.
Meanwhile, the occasion was also celebrated in most Muslim countries and the countries where Muslims are residing, including the UAE, China, Japan, Pakistan, Turkey and Lebanon, on Wednesday.
Muslims in a few countries like India and Iraq where the Shawwal crescent was not sighted on Tuesday, will celebrate `Eid-ul-Fitr" on thursday.
On the occasion of `Eid-ul-Fitr", Muslims wear new clothes, give gifts to children, donate alms to the poor and visit friends and relatives.
`Eid-ul-Fitr" is the first of the two main festivals in Islam.
The second festival is `Eid-ul-Adha" (the Feast of Sacrifice), which is celebrated during the 12th month of the Islamic calender `Zul Hijjah," the month of the pilgrimage to Mecca.
`Eid-ul-Fitr" is a day of great rejoicing for Muslims as it follows a month-long fasting period with the main goal of serving God.
They begin their Eid with a short morning prayer in congregation in order to express their collective thanks and gratitude to their creator.
In many Muslim countries special sweets are cooked to mark the joyous occasion.
Though `Eid-ul-Fitr" marks the end of Ramadan, Muslims bid farewell to this blessed month after having developed better morals, habits, and character.
