Starting NetSupport Tutor 1. Make sure all computers in the lab are on. 2. Login to the Instructor computer 3. Double click the icon on the desktop that is labeled “NetSupport Tutor.” 4. An optional "Class Wizard" screen will be displayed. Complete any desired information (or leave it blank) and click GO when ready to continue. 5. A window will pop up that states “Browsing local network. Please wait.” Wait while NetSupport connects to the computers that are already turned on. Note: To refresh the list after computers are turned on: a. Click on School b. Click on Modify Known List c. Click on Browse d. Click on Add All e. Click on Done 5. When NetSupport is finished browsing, that window will disappear and the main screen will be in full view. 6. Every computer recognized by NetSupport will be represented by a human icon and a workstation number. 7. The computers that are on and recognized by NetSupport will have a green sideways triangle or “play button” next to their human icon. If a computer is turned off, or logged off the network, the green triangle will be removed from the display next to that computer. 8. The computers affected by NetSupport commands are determined by what is selected at the time of the command. The white center portion of the screen is to view (or select) student computers 1. To work with an individual computer, click on it 2. To work with multiple computers, hold down CTRL while you click on each of the desired computers 3. Click on the white tab at the top to work with all the computers connected (this is the default) “Student Register” To recognize student activity more clearly, you may chose to have NetSupport display the students’ names (rather than numbers) using the “Student Register” feature. 1. Click on the “Student Register” button along the top of the screen. A. A window will pop up with all of the computer numbers of active students in a list. B. On the students’ screens, a different window will pop up asking for his/her name. When a name is entered by the student, that window will disappear from the student’s screen and his/her name will be displayed on yours C. Click on Cancel when you are finished collecting names D. Click on Close to remove the window from the screen 2. The computer numbers will be replaced with student names). Supervising Student Activity 1. To view a student’s computer at full screen you can double click any image that represents their computer, i.e. thumbnail or icon. a. “View Mode” (the first button along the top) i. Share: will give you both control of the mouse. ii. Watch will allow you to view and not interact with the student’s computer iii. Control will give you total control of the student’s computer. NOTE: You may change the default option before you enter the View Mode: i. Click on View (in the top menu options) ii. Click on Current Settings iii. Change the Default Setting with the drop down arrow at the right to the option desired b. “Chat” (the fifth button along the top) will allow you and the student to type messages back and forth instantly. You can also click on “invite” to include more students in the chat session. c. “Message” (the sixth button along the top) will send a message to the student without entering a chat mode. A box will appear for you to type a message that will be sent to one student without the feedback available within “Chat.” d. Click the blue arrow (the first button on the toolbar) to close the viewing session. 2. “Scan” is invaluable to instructors; it is considered the most important feature of this program. When you click the scan button (along the top of the screen), a window will pop up that will allow you to select which students’ screens to view – the default is to view every computer. A slider bar will be shown to allow you to choose the seconds between each viewing of every computer. 3. The “Lock” feature (a button along the top of the screen) will freeze the affected students’ computers. The student cannot change the screen while the lock feature is activated. When this feature is executed successfully, a padlock will be displayed on the students screen. a. Check to verify the desired computers are selected (see The computers affected section above). If specific computers are not selected, it will lock “all” (as with almost every feature). b. Click on Lock in the toolbar at the top of the screen to freeze the computers c. To unlock the screens, click on “unlock.” 4. “Show” is a feature that allows you to show your screen to as many students as you wish. a. The second button in the toolbar (next to “Refresh”) is for “Show” or “Exhibit” (depending on which was last used) will allow you to show your screen to the students. b. Select the computers desired (see The computers affected section above) c. Click on the downward green triangle next to the second button to display the options available. d. A list will be displayed; click the first option simply labeled “Show” e. A window will pop up with all of the students’ computers listed. You may change the computers selected at this time if desired. f. Click on the “Show” button to the right. Once this is done the main window will disappear and your screen should be showing to all who were selected. They no longer have control of the screens. g. When you are ready to end this session, double click the NetSupport play/pause icon in the system tray (in the lower right hand corner of the screen by the time) h. The NetSupport screen will be displayed again; click “End.” 5. When the second button on the toolbar is set to “Exhibit”, it allows you to show a student’s screen to other students in the class. a. Single click the computer you wish to exhibit so it is highlighted. b. Click the downward green triangle next to the second button to bring up the list of options. c. Click the “Exhibit” option and a window will pop up. To exhibit to every student, click “Exhibit” to the right. d. The student’s window will pop up and you will have a semi-transparent toolbar on your screen that will become clearer when you move your mouse over it. e. The center three buttons determine who has control of the mouse during the "Exhibit" session. It is on “Share” by default, which means both you and the student are able to use it. f. Use the first button to pause, or the second button to stop the action. e. When you click on the stop button, you end the session. 6. View Thumbnails. The second button down the column to the left displays a human icon holding three magnifying glasses. This allows you to view thumbnails of the students’ screens. While in this window, there are five selection buttons on the bottom. The first three buttons at the bottom are the ones used most frequently. a. The first button selects the time intervals in which the thumbnails are refreshed and viewable. b. The second button is to change and format the size of the thumbnail. c. The third button is to automatically adjust the thumbnails to fit in one screen. This option is suggested. Logging Off, Powering Off or Rebooting Computers NetSupport makes it possible for the instructor to reboot, logoff or power down computers from the instructor computer. This ensures that every computer is ready for the next class (or the end of the day) without requiring someone to go to each computer. CAUTION. If students are still working, these options will cause work to be lost. It is a wise option to view the screens before proceeding. 1. Select the computer(s) to be affected by this operation. If all computers are to be affected, click on the white tab at the top to work with all the computers. 2. Click the down arrow next to the second to the last button along the top. The button will be labeled according to the last function performed with this button. 3. Select the action desired 4.
