Speaking in Front of People
Sometimes you are given an oral exam or asked to speak during an interview or at a meeting. The question you must answer may be completely unexpected. Practice doing this with a small group in class. You can use the questions from the list at the bottom of the text or make up your own. Here are some tips on how to speak well in public.
1.If you feel nervous, take a deep breath. Then take another.
2.Think for a moment about what you want to say. Then say the best or strongest idea first.
3.Stand firmly with both feet on the ground. Do not shuffle.
4.Keep your hands at your sides or your arms slightly bent, whichever feels more comfortable.
5.Look at your audience, but not just at one person. Change the directions of your eyes from time to time.
6.Don’t talk to long. Prepare a good "exit line" (sometimes to say at the end) and when you want to finish, say it. Then smile and sit down.
7.Practice with friends and in small groups at first. Talk with them afterwards and get their suggestions. Practice makes perfect.
