Prime Minister Gordon Brown has sent his sincerest best wishes for Ramadan to all Muslim communities, saying that the holy month "teaches patience and humility, and reminds us of our shared moral universe; our obligation to others."
"Ramadan"s message of compassion and social justice spreads beyond Muslim communities; it speaks of shared values that unite us all," Brown said. Empathy for the less fortunate, he said, is reflected in Ramadan by the daily fast.
He also referred to a hadith of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) emphasizing the duty of care owed to one another and called for diversity that contributes to Britain"s strength to be celebrated during the special month.
"Muslims make a huge contribution to Britain"s success - to our prosperity, our society and our culture. And of course, Ramadan is an opportune time to consider the contribution of Islam not just to Britain, but to the world," the British premier said.
These included the contributions made from Islamic art, science, and philosophy, which have "enriched our lives over many centuries," he said.
Brown said that Ramadan is also a time to recall the Holy Prophet"s message that "the best richness is the richness of the soul" and that he looked forward to continuing positive engagement with British Muslim communities across the UK .
In a message broadcast on You Tube video-sharing website, Foreign Secretary David Miliband also said he was "delighted to send my very good wishes" to the two million Muslims in Britain and to Muslims around the world.
Ramadan, Miliband said, "is a big opportunity for those of us who are not Muslim to learn, to understand and to engage with Muslim citizens who live close to us and ensure that we are working together to bridge the divides of race and religion that too often pull people apart."
He said it was a month of contemplation, prayer and spirituality and a chance to look inwards as well as outwards and look at "compassion, charity, responsibility."
