Referring to the recent terror attacks in Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and other parts of the country, India"s Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh Friday urged to join hands in rooting out menace of terrorism.
"Terrorism, fundamentalism, communalism and extremism have emerged as major challenges to the unity and the integrity of the country.
These challenges cannot be overcome by a divided nation", said Singh addressing the nation on the occasion of the 62nd Independence Day in New Delhi.
Dwelling on the theme of terrorism, Singh urged the State Governments, Political Parties, and Social and Religious leaders to join hands in rooting out the menace.
He said the government is firm in its resolve to meet the challenge of terrorism and called for a politics of consensus and not confrontation.
He said, "The recent blasts at Indian Embassy in Kabul have cast a shadow over India"s efforts to normalize relations with Pakistan and to bring a lasting peace in the region."
He added, "If the issue of terrorism is not addressed in the right earnest, it will be difficult to pursue the peace initiatives." Expressing concern over the recent incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, Singh said the divisive politics will lead the country nowhere.
Appealing to all political parties to keep the long-term interests of the state in view Prime Minister urged them to walk together for a permanent solution to the problems in the State.
He said dividing people in the name of religion can pose a threat to the unity and integrity of the country.
Singh said, "The sacred shrine of Sri Amarnath is a shining example of India"s secular tradition where Hindu pilgrims have been looked after for years by their Muslim brothers."
Appealing to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to cooperate with the government to establish peace in the State, the Prime Minister said, "It is his firm conviction that all issues can be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means.
The Prime Minister said that country is viewed today with respect to one of the world"s fastest growing economies and the world expects India to regain its due place in the comity of nations.
The Prime Minister emphasised that India will be transformed only when every Indian is literate, well fed, healthy and can secure gainful employment.
He hoped that this year an Indian Spacecraft `Chandrayan" will be sent to the moon.
Winding up his nearly hour long speech, the Prime Minister appealed to the countrymen to stand together and firm in their determination to build a new India which is just and humane.
Earlier, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh unfurled the tri-colour national flag at the magnificent Red Fort for the fifth successive year on Independence Day.
The flag unfurling was synchronized with a 21 gun salutes fired by the valiant gunners of the elite 299 Field Regiment.
After unfurling the National Flag, the Prime Minister addressed the nation.
After the Prime Ministers address, school children and NCC Cadets sang the National Anthem.
